A. Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
A Famous Explorer
Roald Amundsen was a famous explorer from Norway. He is most famous for his expedition to the continent of Antarctica. In fact, he was the first man to reach the South Pole. This was a very big achievement. First, he had to sail from Norway to Antarctica - that voyage took six months. Then there was another journey over land to the South Pole - that journey took almost two months. It started on the 19th of October and he reached the South Pole on the 14th of December, 1911. They had a lot of equipment to carry over land, so Amundsen's team needed four sledges. As well as the sledges, the team also had to wear skis. There was also no modern technology in 1911 so they had to use a compass to find the South Pole. They took tents to sleep in and they wore thick fur coats.

Lighting up the World
Thomas Edison invented the modern electric light bulb. Before that, people used to light their homes with candles and oil lamps. Streets used to be dark because street lamps were powered by gas.
But Edison's invention changed all that, lighting up homes and cities with light that was safe, cheap and long-lasting. He didn't invent the first light bulb, but he improved the idea. He made it possible for millions of people to use electric light in the way that we use it today.
Edison was born in 1847 in the USA, when few people understood electricity. His school teachers thought he was 'difficult' because he got distracted easily. His mother was angry at his teachers' attitudes and decided to teach him at home instead. She was a very good teacher. Edison grew up to be one of the most important inventors of the 20th century.
